Casual Friday

So ends the work week! What a whirlwind it has been, first week as a working girl in LA (meeting interns, settling into my desk, starting projects, etc. etc.).
Though generally business casual M-Th...the last day of the week is generally when dress code becomes more lax and people "dress down" (though- standards are different from place to place, for instance our intern coordinator told us, when explaining the dress code, "New York City business casual" is "Los Angeles business." And so it goes!

my lazy casual friday "black" matches "black" outfit theme.

P.S. Wanna guest blog? Post a comment or send us a message. We want to see what YOU'RE wearing.

Wasteland!

Cali sweet cali! Back in Santa Monica, I came up on a vintage/used designer clothing store Wasteland. As I had been looking for a sleeved black dress and ankle heels...I found a DIANE VON FURSTENBERG dress (originally $325!...... *drum roll* I got for $40!) and HEELS! success.

Will definitely be returning :)

New York City Style!

Tiffany and I went to NYC yesterday to spend the day roaming the streets with friends. She's heading out to LA tomorrow (sadly for me!) but we had a really fun day!

We ate lunch at Salt in Soho with Tiff's friend Elaine.

Saw the famous sewing needle and button in the Fashion District on our way downtown.

At Topshop

Stay tuned for more New York - California Style!

Shop the "Vintage" Closet

So today, I went shopping with my mom...in her closet.
Originally I was just looking for a simple black blazer for work that I've been on the outlook for, for a while. But once the boxes opened of clothes untouched for agesss....I couldn't believe how much awesome stuff she had! (geez mom- I never knew you had such awesome taste in fashion)

Blouses, trousers, blazers, skirts, dresses- you name it- I LOVED IT. Usually when I go shopping with my mom, the convo goes something like this:
Mom: How about this
Me: (shifted glance) eh.
Mom: Or this?
Me: Nah
Mom: This looks good!
Me: I don't think I'd wear it that much

But today as I uncovered one piece at a time, I was surprised!
By the end, I had literally just transformed my mom's old wardrobe to my own new one.
VINTAGE really is the new black. Or rather- vintage IS the new.
This experience truly showed me that classic vintage really is timeless. I could see most of the stuff I took in the next j crew catalogue.
A lot of the same reoccuring fashion themes for instance- florals, plaid, loose flowly blouses, etc...

Photo creds [to my awesome sister Kim] who said I didn't take direction well as her model...I'm still working on my angles.

More photos to come in this "Shop the Vintage Closet" series!

Closets

When I got home from school at the end of this semester, I literally took everything out of my closet and sorted through it all, deciding to give away three bags of clothes. This process of really seeing how many things I own made me consider our consumer culture.

American society is based on a perpetual cycle of want. As much as I can, I try to avoid this cycle by buying clothes second hand or swaping with friends, I get great pieces but still don't spend all of my money, and new goods aren't being produced through methods which are harmful to the environment.

My closet is the linen closet, so I don't have much space to work with, as you can see. I keep things under my bed as well.

I keep things really organized so I can find whatever I need. Perhaps a bit obsessive, but I sort by kind of garment and then by color. Since I'm short on space, I pack heavy sweaters and cords away for the summer. Here is about half of my bag collection, mostly from Salvation Army or Goodwill, garage sales, and some old Coach bags from my mom.

Now that I've shared my closet with all of you and I know all of the contents... hopefully we will see many appearances over the course of this summer!

Introducing....

...the closet of clothes - this embarrassing overstuffed one happens to be mine. But that's not even all of it.

This is just my stash at home in NY, and as I shall be returning to the land of Sunny Cali in a couple days for the beginnings of a summer adventure, Sarah and I are happy to present our "stuffed-closet" inspired bi-coastal fashion blog!

Thrift shopping, labels, vintage, and all things pretty- who doesn't love some materialistic consumerism! However, though I'd say I'm a good mix of girly j crew and vintage embellishing...with all the shopping I do, why is it that I always find myself wearing the same combo of cardis, flowy T's, and jeans in school? Blame it on the Socal casual hipster.

From NY - CA, we've decided to finally put our well stocked closets to good use and blog about it along the way. Old friends, new clothes- New York or California....Sartorialist, here we come :)

Where/ when/ and what will we be wearing? We're excited to find out! (and perhaps some guest bloggers :).

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to the NY-CA Style Blog! Your hosts, Tiffany and Sarah would love to introduce you to our blog! The two of us share a fondness for second-hand stores and love to go thrifting together! Although we grew up together and went to high school together, we go to universities on either side of the continent. Our goal through this blog is not only to keep our friendship strong but to keep a record of the fashions in New York and California.

Also, as both of us will be working professional internships this summer, we now need more than our average college apparel! This blog will help us help you decide what is work appropriate and how to look great on a budget.

This blog will give you an insider's perspective on college fashions from both coasts as well as help you look amazing while saving money. We will even share our thrifting secrets :D

I would describe my personal style as bohemian. I tend to wear earthy colors and a lot of jewelry that was my moms from her college years (she had great accessories!!!) I know I tend to go for the same dark colors - greens, magentas, teals, and black. Average outfit: skinny jeans, converse or boots, tee or tank and cardigan, scarf, fun jewelry.

I will be working my second summer as a development/marketing intern at a non-profit performing arts center. The office dress is business casual but as we are located less than an hour from the city, everyone dresses in their own individually artsy and professional style. I will not only be in the office but I will be working events, so I would like to have pieces I could wear for the Saturday evening concerts that could also be used during the day. Since most of my clothes are dark, I wanted a little color for my summer work wardrobe.

I have way too many things. So, after arriving home from college this past week, I went through all of my clothes and cleaned out about 3 bags worth of clothes. I have way too much! But then I went to Goodwill with my friend Brianna...

Here are my finds from Goodwill yesterday:

aeropostale shirt and willi smith blouse

toska vintage dress and forever twenty-one dress

nine west wallet

nine west shoes

bought new a while back, but these are my favorite boots: decree
